Sangrur police organise state athletics meet to raise drug awareness

Sangrur, July 19
Under its anti-drug awareness campaign, the district police organised the ‘Punjab State Athletics Meet’ at War Heroes Stadium today to urge youth to stay away from drugs and join sports.
The meet featured over 24 events, such as 100-metre, 200-metre, 400-metre, and 800-metre races, long jumps, shotput and relay race. About 600 athletes from various schools and colleges in the state in the age groups of U14, U17 and U19 participated in the meet.
Cash prizes, to the tune of over Rs 3 lakh, were given to the winners of various events. First prize holders were given Rs 5,100 each, Rs 3,100 each for second place and Rs 2,100 for third place. Besides, cash prizes of Rs 500 each were given to athletes in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots.
Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal said the athletic meet had been organised by the district police as part of its anti-drug awareness campaign under the slogan “Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life.” He urged the athletes to continue working hard in their respective sports and stay away from drugs. He also appealed to the police for information about drug peddlers and addicts.
The winners of the athletic meet’s competitions were honoured with medals, certificates, and cash prizes by Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal and SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal. Besides the winners, their coaches were also honoured.
