Around 100 sarpanches and panches from the Malerkotla, Amargarh and Ahmedgarh subdivisions pledged to make their localities drug and cancer-free. The oath was taken during the concluding session of an event organised by the Harf Educational and Charity Trust at Sohrab Senior Secondary School on Saturday.

The inaugural and concluding sessions were chaired by Principals Amarjit Singh and Zohra Satar, respectively and Amjad Ali and Dr Tanvir served as keynote speakers.

Sohrab, the convener of the event, praised the sarpanches and panches — who were honoured by the organisers — for their positive response to the call for eradicating social evils, including drug abuse, eve-teasing, illiteracy and domestic violence.

“So many sarpanches expressed their willingness to organise awareness campaigns on cancer after learning about its early symptoms, causes, and consequences,” Sohrab said. He also appreciated the leaders’ commitment to launching coordinated efforts to combat drug abuse and other social problems.
