For many, arranging blood in an emergency situation may be an ordeal, but for 29-year-old Deepak Garg, it only takes a few minutes to do so.
For the past four years, Garg has been arranging blood for those in need free of cost through his contacts and WhatsApp group — Jai Baba Khetarpal Blood Group. Garg, a banker by profession and a 14-time donor, claims to have arranged blood for nearly 500 persons in critical condition so far.
“I have saved contacts along with their blood group in my phone. Whenever there is a need, I find the match in the phonebook and contact the persons concerned. I also post a message listing the blood group, patient’s name, hospital and ailment. Usually, donors come forward within minutes and reach the hospital,” says Garg.
“We are a group of around 10 friends who are devoted to the cause,” says Garg, adding they hold blood donation camps on birthdays and other important occasions.
There are two local blood banks, including one at the Civil Hospital, but these are unable to meet the demand. “I sometimes get request from other towns, so I have tied up with donors at other stations. I also seek their help when need arises locally.”
“My father used to be a donor, which earned him respect in society. So, I got the idea of arranging blood through contacts. I am glad that I have saved some lives.”
