The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a petition of the SGPC challenging the temporary release of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a 20-year jail term for raping his two disciples.

Dealing with the SGPC plea challenging an August 2024 order of Punjab and Haryana High Court, a Bench led by Justice BR Gavai noted that the dera chief’s advocate had raised objection to the maintainability of the PIL before the HC, which was disposed of on the ground that it was filed against a single person. “In that view of the matter, we are not inclined to consider the present plea,” the Bench said.
