Scuffle erupts between police and farmers in Nabha
Farmer union members today raised slogans against the Nabha police for their alleged failure to arrest the person accused of stealing their tractor trolleys.
Meanwhile, the police said that the farmer union members blocked their office road and also misbehaved with the local woman DSP.
Tempers ran high outside the office of Nabha DSP Mandeep Kaur as protesting farmers clashed with police which led to some physical injuries on both sides. While some farmers were hurt, many others even lost their turbans during the scuffle.
The farmers had gathered to enforce a scheduled sit-in protest following a call issued by them last week for September 22.
They had demanded action against a local political leader, alleging police assistance was being provided to him in a previous case related to trolley theft. Farmers also called for a fair and impartial investigation into another related complaint, which they claimed was being ignored by authorities.
According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when DSP Mandeep Kaur attempted to leave her office while the farmers had set up tents for a peaceful sit-in. The crowd tried to surround her vehicle, which led to a confrontation with police.
Both sides resorted to mild baton charges, resulting in injuries to some farmers and cops. The DSP later said that the farmer unions misbehaved with her and also pulled her hair.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the matter and say that an FIR would be registered in this regard.
