The state police have deployed a large number of security personnel in plain clothes to keep a watch on radical elements around Patiala’s Polo Ground, the new venue for the Republic Day function where Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will unfurl the national flag.

The venue was shifted to Patiala on Thursday after a pro- Khalistan graffiti at a Faridkot stadium — the earlier location for the CM’s function — triggered a security scare.

The proscribed Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) led by designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has claimed responsibility for the act.

A police officer said heavy force has been deployed at key locations such as Children Memorial Chowk, Fountain Chowk and other roads leading to Polo Ground.

The police personnel are keeping a close vigil on the walls around the stadium and surrounding areas to prevent painting of any communal graffiti.

ADGP SPS Parmar and DIG (Patiala Range) Mandeep Sidhu were seen overseeing security arrangements during a rehearsal for the Republic Day programme on Sunday.

According to police sources, they are “keeping tabs on the movement of radical elements” as part of their security arrangements.

DIG Mandeep Singh Sidhu said stringent action will be taken against anyone found involved in illegal or unlawful activity.

Mohali: Meanwhile, Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said over 15,000 police personnel have been deployed ahead of the Republic Day programme in the state.

Shukla, however, said the venue for the CM’s function was changed due to “administrative reasons”.

“The CM was to return to Chandigarh on the same day due to his busy schedule. So, a decision was taken on the administrative grounds,” he said.
