After back-to-back cases of desecration, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) convened a special meeting of its executive here today and decided to send the matter to the Akal Takht.
The Sikh body termed the government move to register FIRs a ploy to politicise the matter ahead of the crucial Assembly election next year. On December 7, the Amritsar police had filed two separate cases against 18 SGPC officials and office-bearers in the matter of the “missing” 328 saroops of Guru Granth Sahib and publishing a Hindi book “Sikh Itihas”, which reportedly contains objectionable language about Sikh Gurus. The executive, held under president Harjinder Singh Dhami, termed it a direct challenge to the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, Akal Takht, and an unwarranted interference in the administrative sphere of the Sikh body.
