The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today opened two 25-bed Covid care centres in Sangrur and Ropar. Inaugurating the facility equipped with oxygen concentrators in Sangrur, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal urged Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to assign districts to ministers for better management of Covid and ensuring all patients had access to quality healthcare.

Sikh bodies oppose Sukhbir’s presence

Some Sikh organisations on Friday opposed the inauguration of one of the Covid care centres by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. In Sangrur, Sikh Sadhbhawna Dal district president Bachitar Singh said Sukhbir hadn’t contributed anything for the centre and did not have any right to inaugurate it and hog the limelight for political gains.

“The Congress government had only woken up to the magnitude of the problem recently. The Punjab Government has accepted our suggestion and finally going for global tenders to procure vaccines. Seventeen districts still do not have ICU facilities,” Sukhbir said, urging the CM to open Covid care centres in all 220 blocks in the state.

The SAD president alleged that the government had failed to take required step to provide adequate relief to residents, who were under acute financial stress due to the lockdown. He also reiterated the demand for an immediate waiver of electricity bills for both domestic and industrial consumers for next six months.

SGPC president Jagir Kaur said the Covid care centre in Sangrur was the fifth such facility established by the SGPC in the state and more were in the offing. In Ropar, the SGPC in association with the Indian Medical Association set up another 25-bed Covid care centre, which is equipped with 10 oxygen concentrators, two doctors, seven nurses, a pharmacist and a technician. — TNS
