Chandigarh/ Amritsar, July 20

Gangsters Jagroop Singh Rupa and Manpreet Kussa, who were killed in a police encounter at Bhakna village near Attari in Amritsar district today, were hiding in Punjab all this while whereas the police were searching for them across the country, police source say.

A CCTV footage recently surfaced, showing Rupa and Kussa riding a bike at Samalsar in Moga district on June 21.

Additional Director General of Police Pramod Ban, who heads the Anti-Gangster Task Force, told the media the Punjab Police teams had been following the two gangsters.

“We were getting their footprints at various places, we had the latest information about their movement which was noted in this area,” said Ban.

He added, “Since morning, our teams had been conducting their recce and they were sighted in that area. They ran and went inside a house.”

Meanwhile, four persons, including three policemen, were injured during the encounter. A cameramen of a television channel was also injured in the incident.

The injured policemen have been identified as ASI Baljinder Singh, and Constables Sukhdev Singh and Surinderpal Singh.

All injured persons are out of danger and under treatment at a private hospital here. While two of the policemen received bullet injuries in their legs, another grazed the forehead of Surinderpal.

The cameraman, identified as Sikander., was hit by the bullet splinters on his lower leg. He had ignored the instructions and had gone too close to the encounter site, said police officials.

All three cops were part of the local force. They were among the first responders’ team.

DGP Gaurav Yadav, who visited the injured in the hospital, lauded the role of the policemen for showing no hesitation in the line of the duty. He said the police had barricaded the entire area in view of the safety of the locals. With PTI inputs

CM congratulates police

Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has congratulated the police for the successful operation against gangsters involved in the killing of Sidhu Moosewala. In a message on Twitter, the CM said he would not leave any stone unturned for maintianing peace and order in the state. TNS
