A video of an altercation between a young village sarpanch and a female drug smuggler went viral on social media on February 26. In the video, the woman can be seen admitting to selling drugs and asserting that no one can stop her.
As the matter came to the knowledge of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, he called up the village sarpanch and gathered necessary details about the issue. He then directed the Jagraon police to take immediate action against the smuggler. On Thursday night, her illegal property was demolished at Narangwal village in Ludhiana district.
Narangwal village Sarpanch Manjinder Singh Grewal said he received a call from the CM on Thursday around 7 pm. “I briefed him about the entire issue and the CM assured me of a quick action in the case. Within 2 hours, the Ludhiana (Rural) police reached our village,” Manjinder said. The police not only arrested the drug peddler, but also bulldozed her property built on panchayat land illegally.
The police arrested three individuals, namely Kulbir Kaur, her husband Balwant Singh and Tanvir. The couple has a history of criminal cases related to drug offences.
Ludhiana (Rural) SSP Dr Ankur Gupta said both Kulbir Kaur and her husband were already facing cases. They had built property on panchayat land utilising the money obtained by selling drugs.
He said the police had initiated a drive to identify properties belonging to drug peddlers. All illegal properties, as well as those built by utilising drug money, would be demolished soon, he added.
“We are preparing a list of smugglers. It will be shared with the civil administration and revenue department to know if the properties constructed by these smugglers have any illegalities. Further action, including demolition, will follow thereafter,” the SSP said.
