Smuggling of drugs, weapons from Pakistan into Punjab continues amid border tension
Even as the armed forces and border guarding agencies remained on a high alert along the International Border in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, smuggling of narcotics and weapons from Pakistan into Punjab continued.
The data compiled by the Border Security Force (BSF) shows that six drones and 3.4 kg narcotics have been seized in the vicinity of the border in May so far. There have also been five incidents in which pistols were seized along with 2.7 kg explosive, two grenades and 35 rounds of ammunition.
The BSF is responsible for the peacetime management of the entire International Border with Pakistan, which accounts for the highest number of drone incursions and seizures of contraband among states.
The force also played an active part in countering the threat posed by Pakistani drones during Operation Sindoor and held the fort during ceasefire violations along the border.
The BSF deployed its counter-unmanned aerial systems, which are used to check cross-border smuggling through drones, during the operation and these were integrated into the air-defence network of the armed forces for neutralising drones targeted at various military and civil places in India.
Since India announced retribution for the killing of 26 persons in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, the BSF has been on high alert along the border.
