Drug case: State opposes Bikram Majithia’s plea

A day after senior Akali leader and MLA Bikram Singh Majithia sought directions for being made party to the ongoing drugs menace case after alleging attempts by his political opponents to target him, the state of Punjab today opposed the plea.

As the matter came up for resumed hearing before the Bench of Justice Augustine George Masih and Justice Sandeep Moudgil, former Advocate General APS Deol opened the arguments and told the court senior advocate Dushyant Dave would be representing the state in the matter.

Seeking the rejection of his plea, the state told the Bench the matter was pending in the HC since 2013, but Majithia wanted to become a party now when the case was heading towards a conclusion. As such, his application was required to be dismissed.

Appearing on Majithia’s behalf, senior counsel RS Cheema with Arshdeep Singh Cheema told the court he should be given an opportunity to present his side.

The state, during the course of hearing, demanded the opening of sealed reports in the matter for enabling the government to take further action on them. The Bench has now fixed the case for December 6 for further hearing in the matter.
