Several students were reportedly injured in a clash at a hostel of Guru Kashi University in Bathinda’s Talwandi Sabo on Friday.

However, the university authorities said only two students from Bihar were injured in the clash between two groups from that state.

The incident drew a sharp reaction from Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who alleged in a social media post that “many young people” from his state were injured.

“Punjab has become a hub of hooliganism. The AAP government has fuelled caste-based and regional hostility in Punjab. I demand that the Punjab Government immediately ensure the safety of Bihar students and take strict action against the culprits,” he posted on X.

University Vice-Chancellor SK Bawa said the clash did not occur between Punjab and Bihar students.

“It was actually a fight between two groups of Bihar students, in which one group involved their local friends. The university has identified both groups and all those involved will be rusticated,” he said.

Talwandi Sabo DSP Rajesh Sanehi said they had not received any complaint in this regard so far.

“A youth festival took place in the university on March 17,18 and 19 during which students of various states had to showcase their culture. Bihar students too had collected money. Some of them felt that the money was not spent on the purpose for which it was collected, dividing the students, leading to the clash,” he said.
