Former deputy CM and senior SAD leader Sukhbir Badal today sought the President’s Police Medal for two ASIs — Jasbir Singh and Hira Singh — for showing “exemplary courage and selfless devotion to duty” on the precincts of the Golden Temple on December 4, when an assassination attempt was made on his life.

In a letter to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sukhbir said, “It was remarkable how ASI Jasbir and Hira displayed courage and risked their life to save mine.” He said, “The prevention of tragic sequence of events was nothing short of providential, especially as those bent upon vitiating the sanctity of the holy place and communal harmony

in Punjab.”

SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also wrote to Shah, demanding a high-level judicial probe into the entire incident.

She came down heavily on the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led government for “issuing provocative justifications for acts amounting to killings of political rivals”.

She pointed out that minutes before the assassination attempt on Sukhbir’s life, senior officers of the Punjab Police were chatting with a few controversial figures having a criminal track record, including Narain Singh Chaura.

She said, “These controversial figures were then allowed to move freely and were literally guided to their intended target.”

She said it was clear that the assassination attempt was not “a lone wolf”.

“It was a pre-meditated act and a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to weaken and eliminate the Sikh leadership,” added Bathinda

MP Harsimrat.
