Muktsar, May 20
As sweepers have gone on a strike for the past few days, and heaps of garbage can be seen in every nook and corner of Muktsar, Congress councillors and party MLA from Gidderbaha Amrinder Singh Raja Warring today started cleaning the town.
While Raja Warring drove a tractor, Congress councillors, including Muktsar Municipal Council president Shammi Tehria, removed the garbage from the road opposite to the Municipal Council office, with brooms. Meanwhile, some sweepers reached there and opposed it.
Later, Warring and the councillors held a meeting with the protesting sweepers and assured them a meeting would be fixed with the minister of local bodies soon.
Tehria said, “The sweepers have genuine demands, including requirement of more staff, hike in salary and regularisation. We will appeal to the state government to address them. Presently, we are trying to rope in some NGOs to clean the town daily.”
Gurjinder Singh Brar, a local resident, said, “This is a crucial time due to Covid. The state must talk to the sweepers to end their strike. Almost every road in the town has become a dumping site.”
