Faridkot, April 9

Commemorating the killing of 18 persons, who were shot dead by militants at Sewewala village in Faridkot on April 9, 1991, a large number of members of various voluntary organisations converged at Sewewala village today.

Leaders of various organisations, including the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union (PKMU), Inquilabi Jamhuri Lehar, Lok Morcha, and the BKU (Ekta-Ugraha), demanded the revocation of the National Security Act (NSA) under which many youths had been detained in the state in the past one month.

The leaders said the NSA provided the police and other security forces sweeping powers of arrest and detention.

The deployment of central security forces in the name of controlling “separatist forces” was an attempt to push Punjab to the turbulent period of 1980s and 90s under a political agenda with an eye on the General Election, they alleged.
