Abohar, March 3
The ‘Swarnim Vijay Mashal’, which is being taken on a pan-India tour to mark the victory of India over Pakistan in the 1971 war, was greeted by students, social activists, civil administration officials, police and Army personnel, as it reached Major Surinder Prasad Chowk, near Government Senior Secondary Smart School for Boys, where the 1965 war hero, Major Surinder Prasad, had completed matric education.
Surinder of 16 Maratha Light Infantry regiment was the first Abohar-born Army officer to make sacrifice for the country. On the occasion, his sister Nirmala Godara was honoured by Brigadier Bhupinder Singh Bains. His spouse KL Godara and son Sumit were also present. The memorial to the martyr had been inaugurated by Lalita Shastri, wife of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri here. The Abohar Association of Engineers had last year renovated the memorial.
Brigadier Bhupinder Singh Bains, Deputy Commissioner Arvind Pal Singh Sandhu, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Abhijeet Kaplish, SDM Jaspal Singh Brar, DSP Rahul Bhardwaj, and former servicemen, among others, placed wreaths at the memorial.
The Deputy Commissioner said the country was proud of its troops.
An exhibition of weapons was also organised at the playground of the school. Earlier, the ‘mashal’ was handed over to the Abohar Military Station by the Fazilka Military Station.
