Two pharmacy colleges told to shut course

While ordering shifting of students in same courses to government colleges in their respective areas, Secretary of the Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training Rajiv Gupta said students’ future would not be disturbed.

After conducting raids and subsequent inspections on the directions of the Secretary, Technical Education, Anurag Verma, the department on verifying records of six colleges found two to be guilty of this malpractice. Against the fee of Rs 30,000, the colleges were reported to be charging much more.

Board Secretary Rajiv Gupta said the two colleges had also been asked to submit fee collected from students to the board exchequer with immediate effect. As per the record, both institutes were running diploma courses with an intake of 60 students in the first year. Most of the students enrolled were from outside the state.

Officials said in a raid on October 10, no student was found present at Vinayaka college in pharmacy diploma classes. Punjabi University, Patiala, dean faculty of medicines, RK Goel and Nirmal Singh, Pharmacy Department head at the university, conducted the raid.

At the Vidya Jyoti College, 47 students were found present in the class. In other violation, the colleges were found to be understaffed and were also giving salaries in cash.
