Enforcing the latest traffic rules prohibiting underage driving has proven to be a significant challenge for both educational institutions and the police in the region. Despite the launch of an intensive campaign in the second half of the year to raise awareness about the dangers and legal consequences of underage driving, a considerable number of students continue to flout the rules.

The authorities worked to educate the public about the risks involved in underage driving, emphasising that it not only endangers the driver but also poses a serious threat to passengers and other road users, the problem persists. Many students, restricted from entering schools with vehicles they drive themselves, have resorted to parking their bikes and cars at private locations, such as the homes of friends or relatives.

Recognising that parents play a crucial role in curbing this issue, authorities have now shifted their focus to involving them directly in the effort. By raising awareness among parents , authorities hope to gain their active cooperation in preventing their children from operating prohibited vehicles.

In addition to their ongoing efforts to promote awareness of the traffic rules, the police and education department are now planning events to engage parents and guardians more effectively. These events, which will be held in collaboration with social organisations, will aim to foster a better understanding of the consequences of underage driving and encourage stricter supervision at home.

DSP (Special Branch) Ranjit Singh Bains acknowledged the challenge posed by the casual attitude of some parents towards the safety of their children. He emphasised that more efforts would be made to sensitise parents, including organising workshops and seminars during parent-teacher meetings to educate them about the serious
