Punjab Assembly adopts resolution censuring LoP Partap Bajwa for Seechewal remarks
Following two hours of heated debate in the Punjab Assembly over the Seechewal issue, the House on Thursday adopted a resolution censuring Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa for his remarks against environmentalist and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal.
The resolution received support from SAD MLA Manpreet Ayali and suspended Congress MLA Sandeep Jakhar.
Earlier, raising slogans against the AAP Government, the Congress MLAs staged a walkout during the Zero Hour for not being allowed to bring resolution on the Bharat Ratna for Saheed Bhagat Singh.
Pandemonium started in the House after Bajwa rose to speak on Saheed Bhagat Singh. The Treasury Benches, led by Education Minister Harjot Bains and MLA Inderjit Kaur Mann, targeted Bajwa over his remarks against environmentalist and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal during Wednesday’s Vidhan Sabha proceedings.
Bajwa alleged that it was a planned attack by the Treasury Benches to suppress his voice.
Heated arguments ensued as opposition Congress MLAs and the Treasury Benches traded charges. Education Minister Bains said Punjabis were hurt by Bajwa’s remarks against Seechewal.
Seeking condemnation resolution against Bajwa, MLA Inderjit Kaur said Bajwa should be expelled from the House. Minister Aman Arora also targeted Bajwa for his utterances against Seechewal.
Soon after, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes.
After the House resumed proceedings following the adjournment, the Congress MLAs again staged a walkout after being targeted by the Treasury Benches for comments against Seechewal. Bajwa was not present in the House when the MLAs staged the walkout.
The House proceedings were again adjourned for 15 minutes amid heated arguments between the Treasury Benches and the Congress MLAs. The Congress MLAs alleged that they were not being allowed to speak on the Budget 2025-26, as the Treasury Benches were using the Seechewal issue to avoid passing resolution on the Bharat Ratna for Bhagat Singh.
