A complete shutdown was observed here on Saturday on a call given by Dalit organisations in protest against the vandalism of a statue of BR Ambedkar on Republic Day in Amritsar.

Except medical stores, all shops and commercial establishments remained shut. The Beopar Mandal and the District Bar Association extended support to the bandh call.

A protest procession was also taken out through the local markets by Dalit bodies. The protesters demanded that the government should ensure that such incidents do not take place in future.
