Veteran Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa cremated with full state honours
Veteran Akali leader and former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who breathed his last on May 28 at a private hospital in Mohali, was cremated with full state honours at Ubhawal village in Sangrur.
Dhindsa’s son Parminder Singh Dhindsa and grandson Chiragveer Singh Dhindsa lit the pyre. A contingent of policemen presented a guard of honour to the departed soul.
Cabinet ministers Harpal Singh Cheema, Aman Arora and Laljit Singh Bhullar and Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Rishi laid wreath on behalf of the Chief Minister.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Indian National Lok Dal leader Abhay Chautala, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, former acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh and farm leader Balbir Singh Rajewal, among others, paid respects to the departed leader.
‘Worked for Punjabiat’
During the cremation of Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Sukhbir Singh Badal, president, SAD, met the son of the departed leader, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, and shared his grief with him, saying Dhindsa sahib respected them a lot them and his departure was a big loss to him, besides the family and the panth. He also said that Dhindsaji was a very close companion of his father Parkash Singh Badal. Perneet Kaur, ex-MP and wife of Capt Amarinder Singh, expressed the hope that Parminder Singh Dhindsa would further carry forward his father’s political thoughts. BJP MLA Ashwani Sharma said Dhindsa ji would be always remembered for his clean image in politics. He also said that Dhindsa ji had always talked about Punjab and Punjabiat. He had also worked in a big way in the interest of farming community, he added.
