Punjab Vigilance summons Charanjit Singh Channi in DA case
Chandigarh, April 10
The trouble seems to be brewing for former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as the Vigilance Bureau has summoned him in a disproportionate assets case.
According to sources, Channi has been summoned by the Vigilance Bureau and asked him to join the investigation on Wednesday at 10 am. It will be for the first time that Channi has been summoned by the bureau.
A senior functionary of the bureau confirmed the development and said they had prepared a source report about Channi’s assets. When he appeared before the bureau, a list of the assets he owned would be sought and tallied with the source report.
Earlier, last month, when the Vigilance Bureau came to know that Channi was planning to fly abroad, the bureau had issued a lookout circular against him on March 7. The bureau had been probing the assets of the former CM, his brothers and family members and some aides for allegedly amassing the wealth more than their declared sources of income. Certain contractors are learnt to have been given undue favours by the former CM.
Last year, Channi’s nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey was also arrested by the Enforcement Directorate with Rs 10 crore. The ED had been probing that Honey got the amount for helping the mining contractors and in transfer and postings of officials. However, Channi had termed the arrest of his nephew a vendetta by central agencies.
Earlier, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had also questioned Channi’s absence. However, all attempts to contact Channi remained futile as he did not take call despite the repeated attempts.
