Punjab State Commission for Women chairperson Raj Lali Gill on Saturday said self-styled vigilantes had no right to indulge in moral policing and take law into their hands.

However, she said it was the primary responsibility of women social media influencers to create content that did not breach the social and moral fabric of society.

The statement came days after social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as Kamal Kaur, was murdered over alleged obscene content.

An Amritsar-based social media influencer, Deepika Luthra, too has received threats. Reacting to the incidents, Lalli advocated intervention at the government level, but added that earning money from having a large number of followers was an allurement for social media influencers.

“They should be watchful of the content they are posting as it affects children and youngsters because everyone these days is glued to the social media,” she said, adding that there was need to create awareness on the issue.
