The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Child Helpline in Sriganganagar stopped the marriage of a minor girl near Luv Kush Vatika in Gautam Buddha Nagar this afternoon.

Child Helpline Coordinator Trilok Verma said they received information that the people of a community had arranged the marriage of a minor girl near the Luv Kush Vatika. CWC Chairman Joginder Kaushik and member Ram Prakash Sharma with Child Helpline Coordinator Trilok Verma and Revenue Patwari Om Prakash Bhambhu reached the venue.

Verma said by then, the ‘baratis’ had come from Maujpura village in Hanumangarh.

When the team asked for proof the girl was 18 years old, the girl’s parents could not present any valid document. The complainant had sent the girl’s Class 5 (primary) marksheet to the CWC, according to which her date of birth was May 2, 2008. The parents were prohibited from marrying the girl until she turned 18.

An undertaking from the family and relatives was also obtained. The CWC has asked the police and Anganwadi workers to keep an eye on the family so that they do not get the minor married.
