Wheat purchase begins today
Wheat procurement will officially begin from tomorrow, although the market arrival of the rabi crop is likely to gain momentum only over the next 10 days.
This year, 124 lakh metric tonne (LMT) wheat is expected to arrive in the mandis, though arrangements have been made to procure 132 LMT produce.
Officials in the Food and Civil Supplies Department say all arrangements are in place for procuring wheat. The state government has also secured a cash credit limit of Rs 28,000 crore for the purpose, which will allow them to make payments to the farmers within 24 hours of their produce being procured.
It is learnt that the state government has designated 1,864 mandis for buying grains. There is no shortage of gunny bags.
Shortage of storage space is likely to be an issue this year too amid lack of space in warehouses.
