The rising water level in the Chandbhan drain here has become a cause for concern as no cleaning work has been carried out this year and wild growth is obstructing the flow of water under some bridges.

The Chandbhan drain, known for having the highest water-carrying capacity in the district, plays a crucial role in preventing large-scale waterlogging during heavy rainfall. However, residents fear that negligence in its upkeep could prove disastrous for surrounding villages.

Vishal Kumar, Executive Engineer of the drainage wing of the Water Resources Department, admitted that the cleaning exercise had not been undertaken this year.

“It was scheduled to be cleaned using departmental machinery but the work could not be started earlier. A machine from Fazilka is arriving today. Meanwhile, I have sent another machine to remove the wild growth from under the bridges,” he said.
