During a meeting with officials on Thursday, the DC, Dr Pallavi, said lavatories need to be designed according to the needs of persons with disabilities. She said the lavatories need to be equipped with wide doors, grab bars, non-slip floors and wheelchair approachability. Easily navigable passages inside premises, reserved parking for handicapped with conventional signboards, braille signage for visually impaired persons and access of wheel chairs to every nook and cranny were among other necessary facilities for handicapped persons. The authorities claimed to have initiated a process for the installation of a fully equipped elevator for persons with disabilities at the Malerkotla Judicial Complex.
The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Pallavi, said the senior functionaries in departments concerned had been advised to ensure that the guidelines of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 were implemented in letter and spirit at all government and public dealing premises without any delay.
She said, “Having reviewed the current situation at the Malerkotla Judicial Complex, we have advised officials concerned to initiate the process for necessary constructions and amendments to provide ideal facilities for persons with disabilities without any delay. An accessible elevator will also be installed at the complex.”
The DC said the move to improve and strengthen the infrastructure of the Judicial Complex was aimed at promoting inclusiveness of persons with disabilities in the judicial process and to ensure that every person, irrespective of his or her ability, may exercise his or her right to seek justice. “All officials concerned have been advised to ensure that persistent efforts are made to make amendments keeping in view diverse and special needs of disabled persons,” said Pallavi.
