Will recruit 3,400 constables to overcome staff shortage: DGP
Says another 1,600 personnel to be promoted
The Police Department has decided to recruit 3,400 constables to tackle staff shortage.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday said they would also promote 1,600 personnel — 150 Inspectors, 450 Sub-Inspectors and 1,000 Assistant Sub-Inspectors.
The DGP said other than direct recruitment of 3,400 constables, 4,500 district cadre posts would also be filled in a phased manner.
He ordered conduct of a resource audit and deputation of head constables at the police stations to reduce workload, especially in the NDPS cases.
“Manpower will be recruited over the period of time, ” he added. While chairing a virtual meeting to review the ongoing action against organised crime, drug trafficking and terrorism, Yadav directed officers to remain alert and committed to ensuring peace, harmony and safety of all citizens.
The DGP asked police officers to have an iron-fist approach against the gangsters. “Identify associates of gangsters and put them behind bars. You have full protection and support from the department. Deal with the gangsters fearlessly,” he said.
“Accountability of every officer from the rank of constable to SSP will be fixed and no laxity will be tolerated on the gangster and drug fronts,” he pointed out.
The DGP praised his force for the work done under the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, which has 87 per cent conviction rate in the NDPS cases. Yadav stressed the need for professional investigation to establish backward and forward linkages to identify the source of consignments and nab the “Big fish”.
He asked officers to make maximum use of Section 64A of the NDPS Act, which provides opportunity to a drug consumer — caught with a few grams of contraband — for rehabilitation. He said Safe Punjab anti-drug Chatbot had witnessed 35 per cent FIR conversion rate and told officers to take public inputs seriously.
