Medical fraternity and in-charges of blood banks are worried about steep demand of blood that would arise as weather conditions improve, giving rise to number of planned surgeries. Blood banks are reportedly on the verge of exhaustion of buffer stocks as there was a steep decline in the number of voluntary donors owing to severe cold in north India.
However, things remained manageable as transfusion was required only for Thalassemia as the number of planned surgeries had declined significantly.
The administration has called upon social organisations of the region to organise camps for voluntary donation of blood.
Acknowledging that a number of social organisations of the district have been organising blood donation camps in the past, Deputy Commissioner Pallavi said she had advised in-charge at District Blood Bank and the personnel at Red Cross Society to rope in more organisations for the noble cause. “Though we have been organising events for persuading social activists to come forward in the service of ailing humanity, we have prepared a draft plan to spread awareness about the need of blood donation by organising workshops and seminars at educational institutes and other organised entities,” said the DC, while releasing a poster for a camp scheduled to be held in district on next Sunday.
Tarsem Garg, patron Social Welfare Organisation, said even donors had been facing problems in arranging blood for surgeries of emergent nature. “As most of the blood banks of the region had turned dry due to a fall in number of voluntary blood donation camps, those requiring blood for their kin were asked to provide replacement donations for any unit of blood,” said Garg.
Dr Jyoti Kapoor, in-charge Malerkotla Civil Hospital Blood Bank, said she had started coordinating with outfits organising camps for voluntary blood donation.
