The SSP said the murder was committed on the intervening night of November 28 and 29. Initially, Rupinder Kaur attempted to mislead the police by claiming that a group of thieves had broken into their house, looted valuables, and killed her husband. She had raised an alarm, following which villagers rushed in and found Gurwinder’s body.

However, during questioning, she revealed that after administering a suspected poisonous substance to Gurwinder, the accused inflicted multiple injuries on him. A prima facie examination revealed several bruises on his back and signs of possible strangulation. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report, the official said.

Following the crime, Vishavjeet fled to Mumbai with the help of a friend. He was eventually forced to surrender in a court three days back. During his police remand, investigators identified another accused, who allegedly assisted in the escape. Harkanwal had fled to Mumbai with several valuables from the victim’s house.

The deceased, Gurwinder Singh, belonged to an NRI family. He married Rupinder Kaur in 2023. After the marriage, Rupinder moved to Canada but was deported in 2024. Police sources said that during her stay abroad, she developed a relationship with Harkawalpreet Singh of Balluana village, Bathinda.

Gurwinder Singh’s sister, Manveer Kaur, in her complaint to the police, stated that her brother had repeatedly expressed fear for his life and informed the family about Rupinder’s alleged illicit relationship.
