Fatehgarh Sahib: Two powerful women of the district, DC Amrit Kaur Gill and SSP Amneet Kondal, have set an example of excellent management by smoothly handling the annual Shaheedi Jor Mela where lakhs of people turned up from across the world to pay obeisance. The SSP, while managing security affairs, also kept her baby along with her. For the first time, night shelters for pilgrims were established. Public toilets and medical facilities were available round the clock. 200 CCTV cameras were in place. 11SPs, 26 DSPs and 2,500 police personnel were deployed, the SSP said. The management was praised by the SGPC head and Opposition parties.

Honour for Mohd Rafi’s fans

Abohar: Holland-based NGO ‘Peace to total peace’ has conferred ‘Angles of Peace’ award on ‘The Rafians’, another NGO that has been celebrating legendry singer Mohammad Rafi’s birth anniversary for a long time. The NGO has also been marking the singer’s death anniversary on July 31 for the past two years at his birth place in Kotla Sultan Singh, Amritsar. NGO chief Kapil Kalra couldn’t go to Holland to receive the award, but he joined the award ceremony through video-conferencing. Hundreds of music lovers remembered the renowned singer on his 95th birth anniversary. ‘The Rafians’ had made arrangements to webcast the programme live, enabling fans in a dozen countries to watch the programme. Convener Kapil Kalra said the singer had passed away in 1980 but he was still alive through his evergreen songs.

Wall of kindness

Fatehgarh Sahib: Initiating a wall of kindness, Fatehgarh Sahib DC Amrit Kaur Gill has exhorted people to donate clothes, blankets, bedsheets, crockery, shoes, sweaters, toys, etc. The initiative is meant for collecting household items from donors and distributing the same among needy. The DC was the first to donate a few items. She urged NGOs and others to follow suit. Others, including officials, donated clothes, sweaters and blankets in large numbers. The DC said the move was getting a good response.

‘Neki ki diwar’ in letter and spirit

Abohar: The ‘Neki ki diwar’, installed by Manav Sewa Samiti (MSS) in Abohar and Lions Clubs International in Sriganganagar, has been giving much relief to needy families amid bone-chilling winter as the mercury has already dipped to 4 degrees Celsius in the region. MSS volunteers recently visited Dangarkhera village to distribute hundreds of woollens among needy. Members of the Lions Clubs International, at a recent function, provided 19,340 articles to needy people at ‘Neki ki diwar’. The items included clothes, footwears, blankets, caps, toys, etc.
