Woman’s presence of mind leads to arrest of narcotics cell Inspector

The presence of mind of a 28-year-old woman not only managed to save her parents from a drugs case but also helped her save lakhs of rupees that were allegedly demanded as extortion money by the shady cop.

Pooja, a resident of Rohti Pull, showed exemplary courage, which led to the arrest of Inspector Gurinder Singh, In-charge, Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Patiala, on October 29.

The Inspector had approached her family members claiming that he had proof of their relative being allegedly linked to a drug supply chain.

“Initially, the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh from our family. As we could not offer that much amount, we managed to stike a deal for Rs 50,000 to protect ourselves,” Pooja told the Vigilance Bureau officials.

“It was quite difficult to arrange money but we had no choice. We knew that being a policeman heading the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, he could easily frame the entire family. It was a do-or-die situation. Thus, we decided to approach the Vigilance,” she said.

“We offered him Rs 2 lakh, but he kept on demanding more. After much persuasion, we gave him Rs 50,000 on the spot. I recorded the conversation pertaining to the entire deal and his extortion threats on phone,” Pooja stated in the FIR. A senior Vigilance official said, “The conversation submitted to us by the complainant was enough. We laid a trap and arrested Inspector Gurinder while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh last week.”

“Following two days of interrogation of the accused, he has been sent to a judicial remand,” added the Vigilance official. “We have completed our investigation and will submit the challan in the court soon,” said officials privy to the case.
