Women & kids take walk through Tarn Taran’s heritage
To mark World Heritage Day and the International Day for Monuments and Sites, members of the local INTACH Chapter organised a special heritage walk in the historic town of Tarn Taran Sahib on Friday.
The walk began at Tehsil Bazaar and concluded at the Darbar Sahib here.
Dr Baljit Kaur, the organiser of the walk, said the event was aimed at raising awareness about the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the region.
Women and kids participated in the walk with great enthusiasm and fervour.
Participants visited several sites of historical significance — gurdwaras, mandirs and a masjid — underscoring the town’s rich and diverse cultural legacy. They were briefed on the historical and cultural significance of each site, enriching their understanding of the town’s heritage and the need for its preservation.
Participants took keen interest in old buildings of architectural significance during the walk.
Principal Dr Raman Dua, Dr Dinesh Gupta, Varinder Pal Singh, Shubeg Singh Dhun, Amandeep Singh, Sahib Singh, Prabhjeet Kaur and several local community members spoke about the historical significance of several sites in the town.
Dr Monika Gupta, president of the Inner Wheel Club, Tarn Taran, along with her team, also participated in the heritage walk.
The foundation of Tarn Taran was laid by Sri Guru Arjun Dev, the fifth Sikh guru, in 1596, though the digging of a holy sarovar had begun six years ago, in 1590, to aid devotees visiting Tarn Taran and wishing to settle here.
