Women lauded for their contribution in farm movement

As hundreds of women headed to the Tikri border to take part in the ongoing farm agitation, their menfolk in the Budhlada block in Mansa district celebrated International Women’s Day by holding protest at a petrol station for the 158th day today.

In their address during the protest, farm union leaders apart from elaborating on the significance of Women’s Day also lauded the contributions made by women in the freedom of the nation, Sikh history and now in the historical farm movement.

Balkaran Singh, a leader of the Punjab Kisan Union, said, “Women have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with menfolk and made valuable contribution to the farm movement against three farm laws. Without their participation, this movement would not have been where it is today when it had managed to garner massive support both in the country and overseas.”

He added, “With the implementation of the three laws where farmers, labourers and traders will be affected directly with the increase in prices of basic commodities, the common man will get affected equally.”

In their address, leaders of the BKU Dakonda and Kul Hind Kisan Sabha spoke about the contributions made by women from the state in various mass movements in the past.

Swaranjit Singh, a leader from the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, said, “With corporates taking reins of food business in their hands, each and every section of society will be affected.”

He added, “Once corporate enters the agriculture directly, farmers with large agricultural land holdings will equally be at risk as they will try to take their land as well. Therefore, we exhort large-scale farmers also to take part in the agitation whole-heartedly.”
