The Health and Family, Medical Education and Research Minister Dr Balbir Singh announced that the work on the proposed Government Medical College in Malerkotla would be commenced after finalising the site for the project.

Singh addressed residents, led by MLA Dr Zamil Ur Rehman, after inaugurating a dialysis unit installed at Civil Hospital, Malerkotla, by Hans Foundation. He said the Punjab Government, led by CM Bhagwant Mann, was committed to provide quality medical facilities to the people of the state.

Appreciating the gesture shown by the Hans Foundation to donate three dialysis machines for the hospital, besides providing technical staff, Rehman claimed the development would end the woes of patients suffering from renal issues who had to visit distant cities for availing the services at exorbitant costs.

The residents of the city and surrounding localities were upset as there was no dialysis facility available for kidney patients, whose condition used to worsen due to delay in treatment of patients.

Though some social organisations had come forward to donate dialysis machines for the hospital under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) scheme, non-availability of operating staff remained a major hurdle in implementation of the proposed ventures. Kidney patients can now avail facilities free of charge here in Malerkotla.
