Amritsar, December 12

The intermittent rainfall, since early morning, lead to a drastic fall in temperature and intensified cold in the region on Thursday. Residents, who were earlier dismayed by delayed winters, became excited as was seen from the heavy rush in the market.

Showers started early in the morning and continued throughout the day with small pauses in between. Dressed in heavy attires, which were before the rain confined to the wardrobes, the youngsters were seen roaming around in market places even as it drizzled. “The weather is pleasant and walking in the mild drizzle always uplifts mood,” said Sarika Sharma, a teenager.

Sukhwinder Kaur, another resident, said: “People aren't happy when they do not get a chance to wear the attires that bought specially for winters. Now with cold weather descending the city, these could be used.”

Sellers of woollens also had a reason to cheer as they claimed that the showers would push up the demand for warm clothes. “It always has an impact. If it is too hot, people start purchasing air conditioners the next day and if it is too cold, they feel a imminent need for warm clothes,” said Surinder Mahajan, a trader from Putlighar area.

Though the dip in temperature has brought cheers for most, roads witnessed more than usual number of commuters use four wheelers, instead of scooters and bikes.

The air seemed more breathable and trees appeared greener. “The air is free of displaced dust particles and it will also help people get rid people of breathing-related problems, which mainly were due to pollution,” said Civil surgeon Dr Prabhdeep Kaur Johal, adding that there was a need to dress toddlers and elderly in warm clothes as the cold might result in health ailments.
