11-yr-old wins top position in Pi Asian Math Circuit

Ayush Sankaran, an 11-Year-old Class VI student of Billabong High International School (BHIS), Malad, has added another feather to his cap by achieving success at Clash of Pi Asian Math Circuit for the year 2020-2021 virtual competition. Ayush has won Asia no.1 position for 2 consecutive years in a row 2019-20 and 2020-21 in Class V and VI respectively. The result of this competition was announced in June 2021 and trophies and certificates were received in September 2021.

 Students from more than 1,000 schools in Asia and over 3,00,000 students in 16 countries have acknowledged the circuit making it the most widely regarded mathematics excellence program in the region. Schools from India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, UAE among others were registered for the contest.

 The category of questions asked in this competition is in the form of domains. The 5 domains (3 rounds each) cater to grade-appropriate disciplines of mathematics. Domains are designed to allow for natural progression over the 12-month circuit period. The circuit begins in April each year and gets progressively more challenging as the year progresses.

Domains are named after world-famous mathematicians and are structured to ensure forward and backward linkages with the concepts being tested. The competition tests students on the below parameters.

• Speed - Total time taken to complete a finite set of questions correctly

• Perseverance - Progress over 12 months

• Accuracy - Error reduction achieved under exam conditions

• Consistency - Reduction in the variance of scores

• Excellence - Commitment to working hard at achieving short-term goals.

 Ecstatic over the personal achievement, Ayush said, “I love maths as a subject and I also love appearing in clash of the pi exam. It gets over very fast in 15 minutes, but you have to be quick in your thinking. It has helped me improve my accuracy and speed. I thank my school for introducing me to Clash of Pi. It has been very challenging but exciting at the same time and I would target to appear in the top 20 in the coming year as well!”

 Dr Madhu Singh, principal, BHIS Malad delighted with the student’s achievement said, “We feel very proud of Ayush. He is one of the most promising students of our school who has brought laurels to the school nationally and internationally with his successes from time to time. As many as 500 students of different grades participated from our school for this competition, in which Ayush has brought fame to the school by coming at the top position in whole Asia. I congratulate Ayush on his achievement and wish him luck for his future endeavours.”

 The Asian Math Circuit is the world’s most comprehensive and advanced mathematics circuit for students of Grades III-XII. Conceived by piCirql’s panel of mathematics practitioners and experts (from Columbia University, Trinity College, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and Ecole Centrale Paris), the circuit promotes skill development and excellence in mathematics. Students get a standardized PiMAT (piCirql Math Achievement Test) score on completion of periodic assessments through Clash of Pi (series of online tests).

The Asian Math Circuit provides a framework for students to challenge themselves and progress beyond the boundaries of their school-prescribed academic syllabus. PiMAT scores are cumulative i.e. points earned are accrued year-on-year.
