A one-hour “Transgender Welfare Awareness Camp” was organised by the Social Welfare Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration, in association with the Transgender Protection Cell, Chandigarh, at the school, where six private schools from Cluster 1, Chandigarh, participated in the endeavour to raise awareness about the protection and rights of transgender. Amit, Counsellor, Transgender Protection Cell, Chandigarh, conducted an enlightening session to promote acceptance and inclusivity of transgender in the society wherein, nearly 200 students and teachers from Chandigarh schools took part. He made the audience understand of Gender Diverse People and their inclusion in society. Transgender people face discrimination and exclusion in many aspects of life, which seriously affects their mental health and wellbeing. So, inclusive education has been made mandatory in schools. He suggested to make a Transgender Welfare Committees in schools. Schools must establish a Protection Cell, designated Nodal Officer, Counsellor, and Complaint Officer to deal with the problems of transgender students. He suggested to have separate hostel accommodations for them with equal medical treatment for the transgender students.
