At Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, Class X student Mannat Goyal stands out — not for awards or accolades, but for a remarkable journey of resilience and quiet strength.

At sixteen-and-a-half, Mannat has spent most of her life battling a brain tumour. Diagnosed at the age of five, she has faced more medical challenges in her childhood than many do in a lifetime. Yet, she has continued her academic journey with unwavering determination.

All these years school has been her solace as well as an opportunity to ready herself for the challenges that life has thrown her way. Maintaining her bubbly and vivacious self, she has been doing well academically and had big plans to ace her Class X last year.

But earlier this year, as her condition worsened, Mannat had to undergo oral chemotherapy even as she prepared for her board exams. The medication made it difficult for her to concentrate and retain information, but her resolve never faltered.

Drawing strength from her deep faith in Lord Shiva, positive affirmations, and a focused mindset, she appear ed for her exams.

Her efforts resulted in a commendable 70 per cent in her board exams — an achievement made even more striking by the fact that her results were declared on the same day she underwent major brain surgery.

Doctors were able to remove 90 per cent of the tumor in a procedure that, incredibly, Mannat remained awake for.

What makes Mannat’s journey particularly moving is how closely it mirrors the daily life of any student —early mornings, revision notes, nerves before exams — but with the added weight of a life-threatening illness.

While most students face academic pressure, Mannat has faced that and more, carrying the burden of her health without letting it dim her spirit. Her story offers perspective, showing how strength is not just measured in grades, but in how one keeps going despite overwhelming odds.

Throughout these challenging moments, Mannat found comfort in music. A particular Punjabi song by B Praak that speaks of enduring hardship with hope has been a source of emotional strength.

Outside of studies and treatment, she finds joy in shopping and traveling—simple pleasures that help lift her spirit.

Known for her cheerful and optimistic nature, Mannat brings warmth and positivity to those around her.

Her parents, Devinder and Neetu Goyal, have been her constant support system, offering encouragement and strength at every step. Her teachers, too, have helped her navigate the academic demands during such a difficult time.

Looking ahead, Mannat dreams of becoming either a dietician or a singer — aspirations that reflect both compassion and creativity.

To fellow students who may be struggling, she shares a heartfelt message: “Believe in yourself and stay surrounded by positive people.”

Mannat’s journey reminds us that bravery often lies in the quietest acts — showing up, staying hopeful, and pushing forward even when the odds seem overwhelming.
