Metaphor

A metaphor is a figure of speech that directly compares one thing to another for rhetorical effect.

A metaphor is often poetically saying something is something else.

Examples

  • Life is a battleground.
  • She is a couch potato.

It is a figure of speech wherein a word or phrase represents an object or idea that is used instead to show the likeness between the two.

Simile

A simile is a figurative statement that uses connecting words.

Examples

  • Paul danced like Michael Jackson, at the party.
  • She is as beautiful as Angelina Jolie.

Unlike metaphors, similes create a comparison using like and as.

A simile is saying something is like something else.
