Positive response to English Booster clubs

The ‘English Booster Clubs’ started by the state government to give students a better command over English language have elicited a positive response in the region.

The Education Department had told the officials concerned that the aim of coming up with such clubs was to shun the fear of English (especially spoken) among students from Class VI to XII.

The formation of clubs started from October 12. Devinder Singh Chhina, Principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Sharpur, said the activity was already showing results. “Teachers and school heads are coming up with ideas to bring an incremental jump in the learning levels of students. The English Booster Clubs have become popular in a short span of time,” said Chhina.

Amandeep Singh, English teacher, Nathumajra government school, said, “It is a great initiative taken by the department. Parents are appreciating the move as it will encourage the kids to converse in English.”

State resource person Chander Shekhar said many students had taken admission to government schools from private ones and their parents and guardians had expressed satisfaction over the way languages were being taught in the government schools.

“However, parents also opined that government school students were not so fluent in spoken English. Taking it as a challenge, the department has started ‘English Booster Clubs’, wherein students will be told to make videos and audios to enhance their speaking skills,” he said.

Through these clubs, English teachers encourage students to smile while making clips, to speak loud and clear, to remain relaxed and face the camera confidently and to use more gestures.
