Out of an initial enrolment of 100 students, on an average, only 70 finish school in India (as per Unified District Information System for Education). This high dropout rate, according to an NSSO data, is due to domestic activities and early marriage amongst girls, and financial constraints amongst male students.

To enable such students to complete their studies at higher secondary level i.e. Class XI and XII, different government departments and private institutions offer scholarships. These scholarships can be merit-based, means-based and merit-cum-means based.

Post-Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities

This scholarship for minorities is meant for students who are studying at post-matriculation level i.e. Class XI to PhD. The students belonging to Minority communities (Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis/Zoroastrians) whose annual family income is less than Rs 2 lakh from all sources can apply. They must have secured at least 50 per cent marks or equivalent grade in the previous examination.

Eligibility: Minority community students of Class XI to PhD

Awards: Admission fee, tuition fee, and maintenance allowance

Post Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

Applicable for students with more than 40% disability, this scholarship supports education from Class XI to post-graduation level. The students are required to have passed matriculation or higher secondary or any higher examination from a recognised board of secondary education. The annual income of the family should be less than INR 2.50 lakh per annum from all sources.

Eligibility: Disabled students of Class XI to post-graduation level

Awards: Maintenance allowance, disability allowance, book allowance and other benefits

Financial Assistance for Education of the Wards of Beedi/Cine/IOMC/LSDM Workers – Post-Matric

The wards of individuals working as Beedi workers/Iron Ore Manganese & Chrome Ore Mines (IOMC) workers/ Limestone & Dolomite Mines (LSDM) workers/ Cine workers can avail benefits under this scholarship. They must be pursuing regular studies in Class XI, XII, diploma, or degree level. Also, the monthly income of their family must not exceed Rs 10,000 per month from all sources (For Cine Workers, the income must not exceed Rs 8,000 per month or Rs 1 lakh per annum).

Awards: Up to Rs 15,000

CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme for Single Girl Child

Introduced with an objective to support meritorious girl students who are the only child of their parents, this scholarship provides financial assistance for pursuing studies in Class XI and XII. A student, who is a single girl child in her family and has passed Class X examination with 60 per cent or more marks can apply. The applicants must be studying in Class XI and XII at a CBSE recognised school where the tuition fee is not more than Rs 1,500 per month.

Eligibility: Class X pass (CBSE) single girl child

Awards: Rs 500 per month

Toppr Asha Program

The Toppr Asha Program, supported by Michael & Susan Dell Foundation aims to improvise the performance of secondary grade students from low-income families through the Toppr learning app. Under this, the students of Class IX to XII whose annual family income is less than or equal to Rs 3 lakh per annum can get free access to Toppr’s Advance Pack subscription for one year and rewards up to Rs 10,000 after year-end assessment. The students are required to be comfortable taking tests in English. Also, they must have a smartphone/tablet/laptop/desktop at home.

Eligibility: Students of Class IX to XII

Awards: Free access to Toppr’s Advance Pack Subscription and rewards worth up to Rs 10,000 based on student’s performance in the year end assessment

EWS Scholarship 

This scholarship aims to support the studies of students belonging to economically weaker sections of the society. The students who have passed Class X examination with at least 50 per cent marks and are studying in Class XI and XII can avail benefits under this scholarship. The annual income of their family should be less than Rs 6 lakh per annum from all sources.
