Mumbai, January 18

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi was injured after the SUV she was in crashed into a truck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway this afternoon, the police said.

The mishap happened around 3.30 pm near the Khalapur toll plaza when the Tata Safari Storme the actress and her husband Javed Akhtar were in rammed into a truck. While Javed Akhtar escaped unhurt, the driver and Azmi were injured. Pictures shot by passersby and uploaded on social media websites showed Azmi being helped out of the vehicle and carried away on a stretcher.

The impact of the crash was so great that the front part of the SUV got crumpled.

Officials at the MGM Hospital at Panvel, where the actress was rushed to, did not comment on her condition till late afternoon.

On Friday, Azmi and Akhtar celebrated the latter’s 75th birthday with Bollywood personalities and celebrities in attendance.
