After Ministry objection, Hockey India president resigns
New Delhi, July 10
A day after the Sports Ministry’s letter asking Hockey India (HI) to hold fresh elections for the post of its president, Mohammad Mustaque Ahmed resigned as president, citing personal and family commitments.
Senior vice-president Gyanendro Ningombam has been appointed as the president until the fresh elections are held.
The Sports Minister had objected to Ahmed’s elevation as president, citing age and tenure guidelines of the Sports Code (2011). Incidentally, Ahmed’s resignation makes no mention of the Sports Ministry’s letter. “…Due to my personal and family commitments, I am unable to fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of my position,” he wrote.
HI informed the Sports Ministry that the elevation of Ningombam was temporary, until elections can be called. — TNS
