Most of India’s Olympics-bound male boxers, including defending champion Amit Panghal (52kg), made the cut for the Asian Championships in Dubai, for which the country’s contingent will leave on May 21. Two Olympics-bound names missing from the men’s team are Manish Kaushik (63kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg), both of whom are currently recovering from Covid-19. Kaushik has been replaced by Shiva Thapa, a four-time Asian medallist, while Narender has come in for Satish. Meanwhile, the international boxing association (AIBA) today announced a prize fund of $400,000 for the Asian Championships. The tournament, which was originally planned in India but shifted to Dubai because of Covid-19, begins on May 24. “For the boxers who take first place, both men and women, the award is USD 10,000. For the second, the prize money is USD 5,000 and for both bronze medallists, it is USD 2,500 each,” AIBA announced in a statement.

Saha recovers from Covid, to be available for England
Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has recovered from Covid-19 and will be available for India’s tour of England which begins next month. Saha has reached his home in Kolkata after completing over a fortnight-long quarantine at a Delhi hotel. He was picked for the England-bound squad subject to fitness. The 36-year-old was among the players who contracted the virus in the now-suspended IPL while playing for SRH. Saha will have to return another negative RT-PCR test before joining the pre-departure bio-bubble in Mumbai. PTI
