Odisha CM’s aide Pandian gets FIH award

V Karthikeyan Pandian, private secretary to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has been conferred with the International Hockey Federation (FIH) president’s award for his contribution in development and promotion of hockey in Odisha. The award was announced during FIH’s 47th Congress. Pandian, a 2000 batch IAS officer belonging to the Odisha cadre, has been Patnaik’s private secretary since 2011 and is considered the brain behind the state emerging as a sporting destination in recent times. Odisha hosted the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships and the 2018 hockey World Cup. TNS

Testing times for India’s Olympics-bound shooters

As many as eight Olympics-bound Indian shooters, including some of the country’s biggest medals hopes in Tokyo, will be seen in action in the European Championship here tomorrow. Participating in the continental tournament as guest invitee, the Indians will, however, be shooting only in the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) section, and their scores will not be considered for qualifying for the finals.

Biles makes history with Yurchenko double pike

Four-time Olympics gymnastics champion Simone Biles became the first woman to land a Yurchenko double pike vault in competition at the US Classic on Saturday, while winning the all-around title in her first meet since October 2019. For the Yurchenko double pike, Biles sprinted down the runway, did a roundoff onto the takeoff board, followed by a back handspring with a half-twist onto the vault before finishing it with a double somersault in a piked position.

Lewa breaks Mueller’s 49-year scoring record

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski broke Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old Bundesliga goal-scoring record for a single season on Saturday when he netted for the 41st time in the last minute of their last match, a 5-2 win over Augsburg. The Poland striker is already second on the all-time scorers list in the Bundesliga with 277 goals, behind only Mueller’s 365. Mueller set the previous record of 40 goals in the 1971/72 season, which Lewandowski equalled last week. Bayern had sealed the German league title, their ninth successive and 30th overall, two weeks ago.

Liverpool and Chelsea grabbed the final two Champions League places but Leicester City fell short of a top-four finish for the second successive season on a nerve-jangling final day of the Premier League season today. Liverpool avoided any drama as they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to finish in third spot. Chelsea lost 2-1 at Aston Villa — a result that could have been curtains for them in the top-four battle.
