Indian boxer Brijesh Yadav has suffered a setback in his bid to win a ticket for the Tokyo Olympics. Yadav, who fights in the 81kg division, has suffered a facial injury while sparring with a teammate in Italy. The medical staff has advised him to not train as he is in considerable pain and he will now return to India. Once back, a specialist will assess his injury again and a further course of action will be taken.
Brijesh took a severe blow under his left eye and was immediately taken for a CT-scan. However, the severity of the injury is not yet known.
The executive director of Boxing Federation of India (BFI), RK Sacheti, said it was not a career-threatening injury. “Brijesh will be returning soon. He has been advised rest and since he cannot take part in the training sessions there was no point in him staying in Italy with the team,” Sacheti said. “We have been told that the injury is not that serious but he will be assessed once he is back and we will proceed as per the specialist’s advice,” he added.
Meanwhile, there are doubts about the Indian team’s participation in the Chemistry Cup, which is scheduled to begin in Germany from November 30. The 27-member squad, which is on a 52-day training stint in Assisi, Italy, was looking forward to the tournament after nine months of inaction. However, rising Covid-19 cases and a partial lockdown imposed in some of the provinces has raised doubts about Indian participation. BFI will take a formal decision soon.
