Top young riders of the country will vie for top honours in the Junior National Equestrian Championship at the Army Polo & Riding Centre (APRC) in Delhi Cantt from Sunday. The meet is divided into two categories -- Children-I & Young Rider -- and will run from December 22–24 and December 26–29. For the first phase of the event, the championship has received an impressive 507 entries, comprising 470 individual and 37 teams, across categories for Children-I and Young Riders in dressage, show jumping, and tent pegging.

England midfielder George Eastham dies at 88

Former England midfielder George Eastham, a member of the country’s 1966 World Cup winning squad who was better known for his social activism, has died. He was 88. Eastham made 19 appearances for England, following the path set by his father, George Eastham senior, though the last of those games was before the 1966 World Cup. He did not feature at the tournament itself, where he was the only Arsenal player in the ultimately successful England squad.

India gets hosting rights for ISSF Junior World Cup 2025

India has been awarded the hosting rights for next year’s Junior World Cup involving competitions in rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said on Saturday. This will be the country’s third top International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) event in recent times after the senior World Cup in Bhopal in 2023 and the season-ending World Cup Final earlier this year, reinforcing India’s stature as one of the sport’s top destinations in the world.

Koyel, Nilam win silver in weightlifting championship

India’s Koyel Bar and L. Nilam Devi won silver medals in the 55kg Youth and Junior categories to take the country’s tally to six in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships here on Saturday. With this, India’s medal tally in the continental event swelled to six.

Former champions Mithun, Sourabh Varma progress

Former champions Mithun Manjunath and Sourabh Varma relied on their experience to pack off their much younger opponents in the second round of the 86th Senior Nationals Badminton tournament here on Saturday. Defending champions Chirag Sen and Anmol Kharb also had easy outings. Mithun defeated third seed Bharat Raghav 21-9, 21-18 before Varma got the better of Abhinav Garg 21-17, 21-17 in the men’s singles second round matches.
