Chandigarh, January 21

Local pugilists bagged rich haul of medals on the penultimate day of the Khelo India Games, at Guwahati, today. Bringing in city’s first gold medal in boxing, Rahul defeated Assam’s Karamveer Phogat in the light middle (66kg -70kg) boys’ U-17 category. Vikas won the second gold in a keenly contested 63kg final by defeating Haryana’s Ravinder. Both the boxers are students of PMLSD Public School (Sector 32). In the girls’ U-17 light middle (70kg) category, local trainee Loveleen Kaur, a student of Ankur Public School (Sector 14), won the bronze medal. She was declared joint third position winner with Haryana’s Sneha. Another Haryana boxer Mahi Raghav claimed the gold medal, while Sharvari Kalyankar of Maharashtra won silver. In the girls’ U-17 category of welter (66kg) group, Rachita Dudy of Mount Carmel School (Sector 47) was declared joint third position winner with Pranjal Yadav of Haryana. Sneha of Himachal Pradesh won the gold medal by defeating Haryana’s Lashu Yadav. Besides taking professional training in other cities, these trainees also practice under local coach Bhagwant Singh at the Sector 56 Sports Complex. Director Sports Tejdeep Singh Saini and District Sports Office Ravinder Singh congratulated the winners.

Chandigarh is now place at 16th position on the points tally with six gold, one silver and eight bronze medals.
